At James Weldon Johnson, all of the courses offered are advanced courses. Besides the core academic courses of Language Arts, Reading (in 6th grade), Math, Social Studies, and Science, there is also a wide variety of Electives offered. These include Spanish, French, Art (2D and 3D), Chorus, Band, Drama, Journalism, Computers, and Media Production. Physical Education and Health are also part of the student's daily curriculum.

Ongoing conferences with parents to communicate the progress of students will occur each quarter in the form of letters/email, mentoring, phone conferences, progress reports and report cards. Student attendance and behavior will also be monitored in addition to academic performance.

Each grade level is comprised of three (3) teams. One of these teams is for Gifted students and the other two (2) are for Academically Talented students. A team usually has approximately 150 students. These students rotate among the core academic teachers, physical education/health, and an elective. Each grade level also has their own House Administrator who is responsible for overseeing the day to day workings of their House as well as handling discipline and other problems
which may occur.

The Media Center is located directly across the "breezeway" from the Dining Room. It provides a large, growing body of information as a resource for study and research and a comfortable environment in which to study, view, and read. The Media Center includes a wide range of materials in a variety of formats including books, periodicals, a growing number of films and video recordings, sound recordings, computer programs, and networked computers for information access.
