Florida Tax Free Week
ORLANDO, May 26 2010 – Governor Charlie Crist today signed House Bill 483, the Back to School Sales Tax Holiday, at a Target store in the Waterford Lakes Town Center in Orlando. This bill designates a three day sales-tax holiday from August 13 through 15, 2010, on school supplies, books, clothing, and footwear. The tax holiday is expected to save Florida families $26 million.
“Our children deserve to have the resources and materials they need to be successful and competitive in the classroom. I am confident this tax break will help students, families and businesses as they prepare for a new school year,” said Governor Crist. “It is important that we continue to alleviate the tax burden on Floridians, as well as seek ways to improve the economic future of out state.”
During the sales tax holiday, Floridians will not pay sales tax on books, clothing and footwear that cost $50 or less, as well as school supplies that cost $10 or less. In January 2010, the Governor presented the Back to School Sales Tax Holiday to the Legislature as part of his policy and budget recommendations for the 2010-11 Fiscal Year.
“This tax break will enable Florida families to buy school supplies and clothing for the school year without the additional cost burden of state and local taxes,” said Sally West, director of government affairs for the Florida Retail Federation. “The tax holiday will also provide a much needed boost to Florida’s economy. We are thankful to Governor Crist for his longtime, enthusiastic support of this tax break.”
At the signing ceremony, Governor Crist was joined by bill sponsor Senator Mike Fasano, Senate Finance and Tax Chairman Thad Altman, and leadership of the Florida Retail Federation.

Matthew Young, a seventh-grader at James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School, has been selected to participate in the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program that will be held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland this summer.
Young competed against students from all over the United States for a spot in the program.
According to the Office of Admissions, it was Young’s devotion to academic proficiency, community enrichment and leadership potential that made him an ideal participant.
While at the program, Young will explore cryptography, computers and codes, forensics and fingerprints, biometrics, electronics, and robotics in world-class lab facilities.
Through a hands-on learning environment, Young will use what he learns as he creates and programs his own video game, builds and programs a robot to master a maze and wires his own device for voice modulation, among other things. Additionally, he will have the opportunity to tour facilities such as the hydro and fluids lab, the aero lab, the biometrics lab and the Air and Space Museum.

The updated 2009-10 Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS) is now available for viewing and/or downloading on the district website.
The CSSS can be accessed on the DCPS website (www.duvalschools.org) in the following ways:
· Clicking on the hyperlinks (underlined in blue) “Comprehensive Student Support System” in this email
· Selecting “Learn about students programs” in the “How do I…” section dropdown list
· Clicking on the “comprehensive student support” menu link on the “Students” section dropdown list
The Comprehensive Student Support System was developed by a cross-divisional team as a way to define and effectively communicate how the Duval County Public School (DCPS) system provides services and resources to schools to meet the academic needs of all students. In addition to listing and defining the numerous programs and/or services available to Duval students, the CSSS also divided the district’s more than 160 schools into three distinct “strands” based upon the intensity of regulatory oversight required at the district, state and/or federal levels.
A few of the changes made with this quarterly update are:
· Alternative Education Programs and Behavioral Support table of contents expanded
· Character Education program added to Academic Services section
· New training opportunities added to Professional Development section
· Response to Intervention (RtI) information added
The CSSS, which is updated on a quarterly basis, was praised by the SAC/CASI accreditation committee as something unique to Duval County and an excellent resource guide for both internal and external stakeholders. Although physically printed and bound in limited quantities for its inaugural distribution, the CSSS document has always been available for quick referencing and downloading from the district website.
