Wax Comes to Life

On Friday, February 26, 2010, two of the JWJ 6th grade teams performed an Edgar Allan Poe Wax Museum.  After spending several weeks studying the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe, the Gemini and Epsilon teams became characters from some of Poe’s most well-known works, such as “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Raven,” and “Annabel Lee.”  Through the project, the students delved into the different literary and poetic devices used by Poe in his poems and short stories.  Students used the writing process to create a speech which discussed their chosen short story or poem, the literary and poetic devices used, the perceived theme of the story or poem, and how the story or poem related to Poe’s own life.  On the day of the performance, the students were asked to dress as their character, and became “wax figures” who could not move or speak unless their “button” was pushed.  Parents and other classes were invited to attend, and all seemed to genuinely enjoy the performances by the students.
