A Dedicated Magnet...

James Weldon Johnson College Prep Middle School is a dedicated magnet school. The College Preparatory program prepares students for tomorrow by offering challenging academics and creative learning  experiences, by promoting individual growth in a cooperative environment, and by fostering a commitment to school and community. Advanced and gifted classes in the core academic subjects prepare students to excel in a rigorous high school program of study. Students gain a holistic experience through participation in a variety of extracurricular academic and athletic activities. Our program of study feeds directly to the programs at Stanton College Prep High School and Paxon School for Advanced Studies.

Please visit the "About Us" pages for more details about our academic program and mission statement.

The Application Process

All students seeking placement at JWJ must complete the magnet application process.

Any upcoming 6th grade student from one of 84 different elementary schools is eligible to apply for the magnet program. We also have limited seating for 7th and 8th grade students.

Students are selected by the lottery system with preference given based on various factors such as sibling and military preference.

Please visit Duval County's magnet programs website for more information and to download an application.

 The Team Concept

Each grade level is comprised of three teams: one for Gifted students and the other two for Academically Talented students.  These students rotate among the core academic classes, physical education/health, and two electives.  Each grade level has its own Assistant Principal, who oversees the day-to-day operations of each grade level and provides the instructional leadership and professional development.

As part of its commitment to preparing students for higher learning, James Weldon Johnson offers a distinct college-readiness path:

  • 6th grade - Introducing Jacksonville colleges and careers
  • 7th grade - School hosts state colleges
  • 8th grade - Out-of-State College Tour
