James Weldon Johnson offers only advanced and gifted classes in the core academic subjects preparing students to excel in a rigorous high school program of study. Students also take physical education/health and one elective each year. Typically 7th and 8th graders may choose from a myriad of electives including world languages, art, band, TV production, computers, intensive reading and journalism. Johnson stresses a total-school experience for all students through participation in various extracurricular academic and athletic activities. Students enroll into our college preparatory programs through the district's lottery process. Parents and students who are interested in attending are asked to tour our school to learn more about our programs and have an application signed for priority processing. Once the tour and application are complete, the application must be returned on or before the deadline for lottery processing.

You can access the applications and other forms online by clicking here. You can also apply online.

Please note: Only students who are not currently attending JWJ must complete the application and lottery process for enrollment.

Gifted and
Academically Talented

To prepare students for college preparatory courses at the high school level, JWJ offers only advanced and gifted classes in the core academic courses. Students also take physical education/health and one elective each year. Seventh and Eighth graders may choose from electives including world languages. Johnson stresses a total-school experience for all students through participation in various extracurricular activities.

IB PLACEMENT:

Students must accept the IB invitation by the designated deadline. If a student decides to decline the IB invitation, and prefers, instead, to take his/her chances in the lottery for Stanton, the student should formally decline the invitation and submit an application for Stanton and/or Paxon. In order to be assured placement in one of the two schools  the student must make the two schools the first and second choice. However, making Stanton the first choice or only choice does not mean that the student will get Stanton. It's entirely possible the student would still get Paxon.

Special Information:

Primary entry point is grade 6. Spaces for grades 7 and 8 depend upon attrition. Students not already identified as Gifted may apply for Academically Talented (Advanced). Students may only apply for one of the two programs.

Safety net programs are available for students who experience academic difficulty, including TEAM UP and FCAT prep sessions. The Principal's signature is only given after attending the presentation and completing a tour.
